Overview/Description
This course provides general knowledge and background of the privacy of information, particularly Personally Identifiable Information (PII), explains its profound importance, authority, procedures, and reporting requirements. The course focuses primarily on the protection of personal information privacy. Therefore, for the purposes of this course, privacy is defined as the ability to control the collection, use, and dissemination of personal information. This includes personal information about both federal employees and private citizens. This course aims to help federal employees understand the importance of and how to respect the privacy of an individual's personal information so they can control personal events, be free from intrusion, keep PII private, observe federal privacy laws, and ensure that the Fair Information Principles (FIPs) are followed. This course was developed with subject matter support provided by the Labor, Employment, and Employee Benefits Law Group of the law firm of Sheehan Phinney Bass + Green PA.
