Overview/Description
The main aims of first aid are to preserve life, to help prevent the condition from worsening, to promote recovery and to call the appropriate assistance. Your organisation will have an appointed person or appointed persons who must take charge when someone is injured or becomes ill and who must be responsible for calling assistance. Appointed persons should not attempt to give first aid for which they have not been trained. Whilst trying to uphold the aims of first aid, it is important for the appointed person to remember that they also have a responsibility for their own health and safety. Your organisation or agency will have its own set of first aid rules derived from the Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974, which is the basis of British health and safety law, and from the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations, 1981, which require employers to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work. It's important that you become thoroughly familiar with any emergency and first aid procedures for the employer, first aider, emergency first aider and appointed person. This course was developed with subject matter expert support by DEKRA – Global advisors for safety testing, consulting, inspection, and certification. Please note, the course materials and content were current with the laws and regulations at the time of the last expert review, however, they may not reflect the most current legal developments.
