Confined Spaces in Construction is a comprehensive standard designed to provide protections to employees working in confined spaces in construction. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by the construction industry, the new standard includes a permit program designed to protect employees from exposure to many hazards associated with work in confined spaces, including atmospheric and physical hazards. It also incorporates provisions that address construction-specific hazard, accounts for advancements in technology, and improves enforceability of the requirements. OSHA expects full compliance with the Confined Spaces in Construction standard to reduce the average number of fatalities and injuries in confined spaces covered by this standard by 96 percent.
