Overview/Description
Smallpox is a highly contagious and often fatal infectious disease caused by the variola virus. There are no known naturally occurring transmissions of smallpox and the virus is no longer found in humans. Today, the only risk of contracting smallpox is if the disease is released as part of a human-caused event from one of two laboratory inventories.
