Legionnaires' disease, which is a type of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria, leads to between 8,000 and 18,000 hospitalizations in the US every year. These bacteria occur naturally in water systems and thrive in warm water. Artificial water systems, such as large plumbing systems, hot water tanks, and large air conditioning systems, are the most common sources for the infections and occur at home, at work, or in a public place.
