The industry is made up of a wide range of organizations – from farmers who produce the raw material, to companies who process and package branded products, to retailers who supply food and beverages to their customers. The industry is very competitive and participants are continually under pressure to contain costs. To remain competitive, many companies seek to exploit the economies of scale that result from mergers and acquisitions. At the same time health and safety is a paramount concern, and strict standards are legally enforced. The industry is monitored both by national governments and international bodies like the World Health Organization. This course is designed to help learners understand key concepts, issues, and challenges associated with the food and beverage industry, and the strategies employed to meet some of those challenges. It identifies the main sectors and business drivers, reviews the industry business model, and outlines the competitive environment and current trends. This course was updated in 2015.
